At Better Bodies, our staff has extensive experience in a variety of massage techniques to help with those aches and pains.
Remedial Massage
Remedial Massage is a method of palpating the soft tissues of the body to have a relaxation or lengthening effect to improve or restore function and range of motion. Remedial massage uses various techniques and can be gentle, shallow, deep or strong to relieve and repair damage and speed up your bodies own repair mechanism.
Myofascial Release
Fascia refers to fibrous bands of connective tissue that links every organ, muscle and tissue in the body with every other part. Myofascial release therapy is a manual massage technique that stretches and releases tension in the fascia tissue to increase flexibility and range of motion in the muscle, fascia and in some cases the joint.
What to Expect
In the first 24 - 72 hours after a massage, you may feel tenderness or superficial soreness through the area that was massaged, particularly if this is your first massage of this kind. Those who are susceptible to bruising may bruise through some areas worked and there is the possibility of feeling tired or lethargic immediately after a massage.
Why Post Massage Pain May Occur
A muscle is simply made up of bundles of muscle fibres. When a muscle has been damaged or put under stress, small tears occur within the muscle fibres. When the healing process begins, new fibres are layed down in a criss-cross pattern. During this process, adhesions can occur within the muscle which may decrease its range of motion. Massage treatments aid in the realignment process so that the muscle can relax and contract effectively. To realign these fibres, particularly in the deeper muscles, the amount of pressure required may cause a slight of bruising and discomfort in movement.
To aid in the recovery process after a massage, it is recommended that you increase your daily water intake by 1 litre more than you would normally consume in a day. This is to help flush out any toxins and waste products that are released into the system after a massage. Avoid excess alcohol, tea, coffee and other toxins for a minimum of 24 hours after a massage as this will help reduce the feeling of tiredness and fatigue that may occur.
It is important to adhere to the recommendations made by your therapist regarding the use of ice and heat after the treatment. Ice is excellent for reducing local inflammation and the use of a heat pack encourages nourishing blood to flow into the muscle aiding the recovery process. You also let your therapist know if you are taking any blood thinning medication or aspirin as this can increase the possibility of excessive bleeding in the muscle resulting in severe bruising.
Contact your therapist if you experience any significant discomfort following your treatment.
